Tijdens de depressiejaren in het interbellum wordt een dansmarathon georganiseerd in Hollywood. De film volgt de deelnemers die allen, wanhopig van de armoede, koste wat het kost willen winnen of de aandacht willen krijgen van de ceremoniemeester die tevens op zoek is naar talent voor in de filmindustrie.
