Waargebeurd verhaal over de romance tussen de Amerikaanse dichteres Sylvia Plath en de Engelse poeët Ted Hughes. Al tijdens haar high school-periode ondernam Plath een zelfmoordpoging. Via een beurs reisde ze naar Engeland waar ze aan de universiteit van Cambridge kon studeren. Hier ontmoette ze Hughes met wie ze uiteindelijk trouwde. Hun huwelijk echter, ging niet over rozen.
