De vergrijsde Hammett (Frederic Forrest) zit in zijn hotelkamer de zoveelste pulp-roman te schrijven, terwijl hij zich bijna kapot hoest van de TBC. Tot een van zijn ex-partners opduikt, Joe Archer. De twee geraken onmiddellijk verwikkeld in een duister web van moord en misdaad.
