'Gardens of Stone' verwijst naar de de Arlington national Cementry, Virginia. Hier liggen de grote helden begraven van de twee wereldoorlogen en de oorlog tegen Vietnam. De begraafplaats wordt geleid door de 'Old Guard'. Een elitegroep oudmilitairen die hun strepen verdient hebben. Tijdens de Vietnamoorlog wordt een jonge recruut toegewezen aan de groep en hij droomt er van om te vechten en te sterven voor zijn vaderland. Sergeant Hazard en Sergeant-Majoor Nelson worden zijn mentoren en zij proberen hem wijsheid bij te brengen in de waanzin om hen heen.
