Hoofdinspecteur Maurice Jobson moet zich de zeer vergelijkbare verdwijning herinneren van Clare Kemplay, die in 1974 dood werd aangetroffen, en de daaropvolgende gevangenneming van de plaatselijke jongen Michael Myshkin. De aangespoelde lokale advocaat John Piggott raakt overtuigd van de onschuld van Myshkin en begint namens hem te vechten, waardoor hij onbewust een katalysator vormt voor Jobson om een aantal fouten recht te zetten.
