De suïcidale Amerikaan Arthur Brennan vertrekt op een dag naar Japan om ‘Aokigahara’ te bezoeken, een mysterieus bos dat ook wel bekend staat als ‘de Zee van Bomen.’ Jaarlijks gaan mensen daar naar toe om over leven en dood te beraden. Wanneer Arthur eenmaal de perfecte plek heeft gevonden om zelfmoord te plegen, ontmoet hij Takumi Nakamuri, een Japanse man die eveneens het nut van het leven niet meer inziet.
