Paul Manderley, excentrieke historicus, en zijn vrouw leven in een geïsoleerd kasteel-achtig huis in de Mojave woestijn. Wanneer een gast plotseling instort, wordt Charlie Chan gevraagd om langs te komen. Nadat alle communicatie met de buitenwereld stopt, blijkt dat iemand toegang heeft tot diverse soorten gif, en bereid is die te gebruiken.
