De jonge Nicholas leeft een comfortabel leventje. Dit verandert echter wanneer zijn vader overlijdt en z'n familie zonder geld komt te zitten. Nicholas reist met z'n moeder en zuster af naar Londen, om hulp te zoeken bij hun rijke oom Ralph. Ralph heeft echter niet het beste met zijn familie voor. Nicholas wordt naar een school gestuurd die gerund wordt door de wrede Wackford Squeers.
