Als Rendall Thomasson, een leraar uit Brooklyn, op straat is neergestoken, verschijnt op zijn begrafenis een onverwachte bezoeker. Het is Carl Thomasson, de broer van Rendall en huursoldaat. Carl is vastbesloten om de dood van zijn broer te wreken. Hij meldt zich aan als invaller op de school van Rendall en gaat werken in een aparte vleugel van het gebouw, waar de moeilijk opvoedbare kinderen zitten.
