Het stel Drake en Patty doet de aankoop van hun leven, een prachtig Victoriaans huis in San Francisco. Om de kosten te drukken, verhuren ze het appartement beneden aan een Chinees echtpaar, en de studio aan Carter Hayes. Hayes lijkt een perfecte huurder, goede referenties en veel geld op de bank. Maar naarmate Hayes vreemde en asociale trekjes gaat vertonen, krijgen Drake en Patty hier spijt van, en verandert hun leven in een nachtmerrie.
