Een negenenzestig jaar oude filmregisseur, Jake Hannaford, probeert hopeloos zijn carrière nieuw leven in te blazen. Hij heeft hierin weinig succes. Maar dan, op zijn zeventigste verjaardag, treft het noodlot hem daadwerkelijk. Hij komt om bij een auto-ongeluk. Hannaford was juist bezig met een filmproject, waarbij de hoofdrolspeler de productie verliet.
