Het episodische levensverhaal van de Iers-Amerikaanse priester Stephen Fermoyle. Vanaf zijn inwijding in 1917 tot aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog krijgt Fermoyle te maken met verschillende tegenslagen. De keiharde werkelijkheid van het leven doet hem regelmatig aan zijn geloof twijfelen. Maar het is niet alleen ellende wat op zijn pad komt. Een ontmoeting met de mooie Annemarie is misschien wel de grootste beproeving. Is de liefde het waard om zijn roeping en carrière aan de kant te schuiven?
