Uit het armzalige New Jersey vertrekken is altijd al Jed Milligans obsessie geweest. Wanneer de vrouw van stand Ashley deGanay wel met hem wil trouwen, is Jed dan ook in de zevende hemel, denkende dat hij vanaf dan in luxe zal leven. Maar als Ashley hem voor het altaar in de steek laat, besluit hij zelfmoord te plegen. Maar voor hij die daad kan voltooien, merkt hij Mimi op, en zij is alles wat Ashley niet is.
