Malcolm is een nerd wonend in de The Bottoms, een ruwe buurt gelegen in Inglewood, Los Angeles. Tussen de drugsdealers en bende oorlogen probeert Malcolm vooral zijn examens te halen en z'n collegeaanvragen te voldoen, met een droom om ooit naar Harvard te gaan. Wanneer de kans zich voordoet om naar een hip underground feest te gaan, leidt dit tot een groot avontuur voor Malcolm en zijn vriendin, waarin hij eindelijk 'dope' kan zijn.
