Nadat Inge haar man Olaf heeft begraven, gaan haar gedachten terug naar de jaren 20, toen zij vanuit Noorwegen als postbruid naar Minnesota kwam. Zij vertelt aan haar kleinzoon hoe zij haar onbekende bruidegom ontmoette en hoe het hun moeilijk werd gemaakt om te trouwen. Het bruidspaar kreeg te maken met allerlei sociale en bureaucratisch regels die hun huwelijk in de weg stonden.
