In 1990 begeeft Amélie zich op de Japanse arbeidsmarkt. Ze vindt een baan als tolk in Tokio en maakt kennis met een meedogenloze bedrijfscultuur. Bij Yumimoto, een firma met een onwrikbare hiërarchie, wordt van de werknemers de puurste kadaverdiscipline verwacht. Haar superieuren beschouwen de westerse dadendrang en ondernemingslust van Amélie als het toppunt van subversie.
