Een Franse officier is zijn regiment kwijt. Hij zwerft langs de kust en bezwijkt bijna aan uitputting en dorst. Hij wordt gered door de beeldschone Helena die echter net zo snel weer verdwijnt. Dan arriveert Andre bij het vervallen kasteel van Baron Von Leppe, waar hij een schilderij van Helena ziet. Maar de oude baron verzekert hem dat het een schilderij is van zijn echtgenote Lisa, die twintig jaar eerder overleedt.
