John Hollar, een aspirant kunstenaar in New York, keert terug naar zijn geboortestad midden in Amerika aan de vooravond van een hersenoperatie van zijn moeder. Vergezeld door zijn vriendin, acht maanden zwanger van hun eerste kindje, is John gedwongen weer toe te treden tot de gekke wereld die hij achterliet. Zijn disfunctionele familie, middelbare school vrienden, en zijn over-enthousiaste ex zijn weer terug in zijn leven.
