Anthony O'Malley (Caine) probeert jonge collega Tom (Moran) over te halen om van zijn acteertalent gebruik te maken en zich voor te doen als iemand anders. O' Malley heeft het plan opgevat om gangsterbaas Barreller (Michael Gambon) af te persen. Alles gaat goed totdat de dochter van de gangster verliefd wordt op Tom. Tom speelt ondertussen de rol van de vriend van haar zus.
