Kerstavond. Een Boeing 747 is op weg van New York naar Los Angeles met aan boord slechts een handvol passagiers. Een van hen is de arrestant Ryan Weaver (Ray Liotta), een veroordeelde seriemoordenaar die bij aankomst de elektrische stoel te wachten staat. Halverwege de vlucht breekt een enorm noodweer los, waarin Weaver weet te ontsnappen. Met de piloten dood en de overige passagiers opgesloten koerst 's werelds grootste vliegtuig op de automatische piloot richting L.A. Airport.
