Steve Ford (Bruce Willis) is een afgezakte privé-detective uit Los Angeles wiens zakelijke en persoonlijke wereld botsen, nadat zijn liefdevolle huisdier Buddy gestolen wordt door een beruchte bende. Door een reeks gekke omstandigheden voert hij klusjes uit voor de bende, terwijl hij achterna gezeten wordt door twee wraakzuchtige Samoaanse broers, een woekeraar en nog een paar andere duistere figuren. Steve heeft er alles voor over om weer herenigd te worden met zijn hond.
