Cumberland, 1348. De pest verspreidt zich in het middeleeuwse Engeland. Het afgelegen dorp kleine Griffin wordt ook bedreigd. Maar de 9-jarige jongen heeft een terugkerende droom die de sleutel bevat tot een kleine hoop op overleving: een meer met een kist erop drijvend. Een witte kerk met een ijzeren kruis. Een vallende handschoen. Een vallend silhouet. Een fakkel tuimelt door een donkere schacht de oneindigheid in. Samen met zijn broer herkent hij daarin een profetie om aan de Zwarte Dood te ontsnappen. Dus gaan ze met een paar mannen op reis naar een verre kathedraal, waar ze een ijzeren kruis willen oprichten als offer aan God. Haar pad leidt hen door een diepe en donkere mijnschacht naar een onbekend land en een volkomen bizarre tijd: naar het huidige Nieuw-Zeeland van de jaren tachtig.
