Charles Clover, schrijver van het gelijknamige boek en journalist bij The Daily Telegraph, is onze gids in deze eerste lange onderzoeksdocumentaire over de rampzalige gevolgen van overbevissing. The End of the Line begint met de kabeljauw, die exemplarisch is voor het lot dat vele andere vissen te wachten staat. Het reusachtige visgebied bij Newfoundland leek ooit een onuitputtelijke bron maar in 1992 was de kabeljauw plotseling op. Veertigduizend woedende vissers verloren hun baan. Sindsdien is de gehele visstand dramatisch gedaald. Als het zo doorgaat zwemmen er alleen nog algen, plankton, wormen en kwallen in de oceanen. Ondertussen gaat de illegale vangst gewoon door. De EU faalt ondertussen in het vaststellen van algemene quota.
