Het verhaal over Frances Farmer. Ze is vastberaden om actrice te worden, maar niet volgens de regels van Hollywood. Een schrijver van toneelstukken overtuigt haar om naar New York te komen. Daar merkt ze dat de theatergroep haar bekendheid gebruikt om bezoekers aan te trekken.
