De film speelt zich af tussen Londen en het idyllische Britse platteland tijdens de periode vóór de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In een tijd van onzekerheid en grote spanning draait het verhaal om de aanzienlijke familie Keyes, die er op gebrand is hun zeer traditionele manier van leven te handhaven. De oudste dochter Anne is een ontluikende jonge actrice die verliefd is op Lawrence, ambtenaar bij Buitenlandse Zaken. Maar haar schijnbaar perfecte leven begint zich dramatisch te ontwikkelen als ze op geheime opnamen van de appeasement-beweging stuit. Terwijl ze de bron van deze opnamen tracht te ontdekken, worden duistere geheimen onthuld die leiden tot de dood van een zeer goede vriend. Als de oorlog uitbreekt, ontdekt Anne de waarheid en ze vlucht naar Londen om een bevestiging voor haar verdenkingen te vinden. Ze wordt echter gevangen genomen en pas dan begint ze eindelijk te ontdekken hoe vreselijk ze is verraden.
