Het is 1963 en Hanna groeit op in Montréal. Ze is net voor het eerst ongesteld geworden, dus het leven wordt er niet overzichtelijker op. Thuis hebben ze bovendien geen geld, Hanna's vader is een overlevende van de holocaust en heeft een moeilijke verhouding met haar moeder, die voor het inkomen zorgt. Op school is Hanna een buitenbeentje. Ze ontvlucht de werkelijkheid door steeds opnieuw 'Vivre sa vie' van Jean-Luc Godard te bekijken.
