Rechter Cooke is een goede echtgenoot en een goede vader. In het gerechtshof heeft hij de bijnaam Old Man Maximum. Op een dag stort het leven van rechter Cooke in elkaar als hij te horen krijgt dat zijn vrouw een hersenentumor heeft. Aangezien haar pijn verergert, begint hij over na te denken om haar van haar pijn te verlossen.
