Op dertienjarige leeftijd ontwikkelt John Hull staar. Operaties volgen maar baten niet. Dertig jaar later - Hull is inmiddels professor theologie, gelukkig getrouwd met Claire en vader van twee kleine kinderen - verdwijnt het laatste streepje licht en is hij volledig blind. Hoewel hij het lange tijd had zien aankomen, raakt het hem hard. Om er niet aan onderdoor te gaan, begint Hull een audiodagboek. De zestien uur gesproken tekst die hij in drie jaar opspaart, worden later omgewerkt tot een boek en vormen de basis voor “Notes on Blindness”.
