Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) bezit alle traditionele ingrediënten om gelukkig te zijn, maar wordt echter overspoeld door paniek, verdriet en verwarring. Na een pijnlijke scheiding besluit Liz een radicale stap te nemen: ze gaat een jaar lang alleen op reis. Op haar zoektocht naar evenwicht en geluk bezoekt ze Italië, India en Indonesië. Italië staat in het teken van eten en daar leert ze la dolce vita kennen, in India schrobt ze tempelvloeren en leert ze de kracht van meditatie kennen, en in Indonesië de balans tussen ernst en lichtvoetigheid – maar ook nog iets wat ze niet verwacht had.
