Na een afschuwelijke tragedie proberen twee mensen hun leven opnieuw vorm te geven. Wanneer Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) haar echtgenoot in een daad van willekeurig geweld verliest, smeedt zij een onwaarschijnlijke verhouding met Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro), de beste jeugdvriend van haar overleden echtgenoot. Jerry is een dramatische heroïnegebruiker - alles wat in zijn leven ooit belangrijk was heeft hij door zijn verslaving vernietigd. Als Audrey ontdekt dat Jerry de enige persoon is die haar kan helpen haar verlies te overleven, vindt Jerry de kracht om zijn eigen problemen te overwinnen.
