Het is juli 1962. Edward en Florence denken dat hun huwelijk hen geluk, vertrouwen en vrijheid zal brengen en hun ware dromen zal verwezenlijken. De mooie belofte voor de toekomst kan echter niet hun zorgen over de huwelijksnacht wegnemen. Edward, die weinig ervaring heeft met vrouwen, ergert zich aan zijn seksuele bekwaamheid. Florence haar angsten zijn nog groter. Ze heeft last van tegenstrijdige emoties en angst voor het moment dat ze zich zal overgeven.
