In het jaar 1825 zit de jonge Ierse Clare, een veroordeelde vrouw, een Britse officier achterna in Tasmanië. Ze zweert wraak voor de gruwelijke misdaad die hij pleegde op haar familie. Ze wordt vergezeld door de jager Billy, afkomstig van de Aboriginalgemeenschap.
