De film volgt Franz Jägerstätter en zijn vrouw Fani die wonen op het idyllische Oostenrijkse platteland en wordt verteld door middel van echte brieven uit de oorlog. Het koppel raakt in strijd met de leden van hun hechte stadje, de kerk, hun regering en zelfs hun vrienden.
