De nonnen Alessandra, Fernanda en Genevra leiden een eenvoudig bestaan in hun klooster. Met regelmaat van de klok schelden ze de boer, werkzaam op het terrein, uit tot hij het niet langer verdraagt en wegvlucht. Hierop neemt eerwaarde Tommasso de nieuwe knecht Massetto aan. Deze is een viriele jonge dienaar die gedwongen wordt onder te duiken. Om enige verleiding bij de zusters te ontmoedigen moet hij zich voordoen als een doofstomme. Massetto worstelt met het handhaven van deze leugen als het onderdrukte nonnenklooster uitbarst in een wervelwind van seksualiteit, drugsmisbruik en feestvreugde.
