De film speelt zich af in het Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Twee mannen keren terug uit de oorlog en gaan werken op een boerderij op het platteland van Mississippi. Ze moeten het opnemen tegen een barbaarse sociale hiërarchie in een meedogenloze cultuur. Ze hebben moeite met het heersende racisme en om zich aan te passen aan het leven na de oorlog.
