In 1938 wordt de Joodse activiste Emma Sachs doelwit van de nazi’s. Wanneer zij overlijdt, wordt er gedacht aan moord. Waren het de nazi’s of toch iemand anders? Detective Tony Rossini gaat op onderzoek uit en werkt hierbij samen met theaterdirecteur Larry “Cash” Carter (Gene Wilder), die bevriend is met de familie Sachs.
