De 18-jarige Madeline "Maddy" Whittier lijdt aan het Boy in the bubble-syndroom wat haar dwingt om steeds in een steriele omgeving te verblijven en dus thuis te zitten. Haar wereld bestaat uit haar moeder, haar verpleegkundige en haar geliefde boeken. Wanneer een nieuwe buurjongen naast haar komt wonen, ontwikkelen de twee een relatie via digitale communicatie.
