Fijne hotspot in Brooklyn: de Park Slope Food Coop, een supermarkt waar je tegen lage prijzen de heerlijkste dingen kunt kopen. Maar pas op: wie in de Food Coop boodschappen wil doen, moet er ook wérken. De Food Coop is immers een coöperatieve supermarkt: de klanten zijn tevens de eigenaars, en wie lid wil worden, is verplicht om tweeënhalf uur per maand de boel mee draaiende te houden. Behalve een boeiend sociaal experiment vormt de Food Coop ook – toch naar Amerikaanse maatstaven – een behoorlijk uniek economisch systeem: de meeste producten komen van lokale boeren; de eetwaren zijn altijd dagvers; en het afval wordt netjes gecomposteerd. Food Coop biedt een unieke blik achter de schermen van dit fenomeen.
