Het verhaal draait om drie generaties van de familie Leonid. Ze leven samen onder de rijke patriarch Aristide. Nadat Aristide door zijn eigen oogmedicijn is vergiftigd, vertelt zijn kleindochter Sophia haar verloofde Charles Hayward dat ze niet kunnen trouwen totdat de moordenaar gevonden is. De vader van Charles, "The Old Man", is assistent commissaris bij Scotland Yard die onderzoek doet van binnen uit. Daarnaast onderzoekt de aangewezen rechercheur Taverner de zaak.
