Mary's leven is gedefinieerd door een reeks van tijdelijke baantjes en een halfslachtige poging om een schrijfster te worden. Maar dat verandert als ze thuiskomt en haar vriendje dood voor de televisie vindt. Hij wordt gecremeerd. Ze ondervindt problemen om zich van de as te ontdoen. Toevallig wordt ze ook bassist in een rockband. Ze krijgt een goede band met de hond die hij achterliet. Verder zijn er ongemakkelijke ontmoetingen met tal van ex-minnaressen. Mary ontdekt dat haar vriendje veel meer voor haar verborgen hield dan dat ze zich zelf kon voorstellen...
