Emily Boynton, de stiefmoeder van drie kinderen, chanteert de familieadvocaat om een tweede testament van haar overleden echtgenoot te vernietigen dat de kinderen van haar dominerende invloed zou hebben bevrijd. Ze neemt zichzelf, de kinderen en haar schoondochter mee op vakantie naar Europa en het Heilige Land. Bij een opgraving wordt Emily dood aangetroffen en Hercule Poirot gaat op onderzoek uit.
