Duimelijntje is het antwoord op de gebeden van haar moeder, maar wordt al te snel door Moeder Pad gestolen als vrouw voor haar zoon. Met de hulp van veel verschillende boswezens, vooral de zwaluw, overwint Duimelijntje veel obstakels in een poging terug te keren naar haar moeder.
