New York City. Archy, een journalist van de lokale krant, springt in de rivier om zelfmoord te plegen. Hij komt echter terug op aarde als een kakkerlak. Hij is stapelverliefd op Mehitabel, een zorgeloze kat die in het steegje bij het kantoor woont. Archy gaat samen met haar op avontuur. Big Bill wil Mehitabel echter ook voor zich winnen.
