Het verhaal speelt zich af in Afghanistan en focust op het harde leven onder het juk van de talibanbeweging. Centraal staat het twaalfjarige meisje Parvana. Wanneer haar vader, een intellectueel en de enige kostwinner van het gezin, ten onrechte in de gevangenis wordt opgesloten.
