Sinds Paul (James Woods) zijn vrouw overleden is, leeft hij alleen met zijn tien-jarige dochter Hilary (Missy Crider) en zeven-jarige zoon Bobby (Keegan MacIntosh). Zijn leven verandert wanneer hij Mary (Anne Archer) ontmoet. Deze zelfstandige vrouw die weinig ervaring heeft met kinderen en het huishouden trekt bij hem in. Al vlug ontstaan er problemen want Paul vergelijkt haar in alles met Jane, zijn eerste vrouw.
