Het verhaal volgt Benio 'Haikara-san' Hanamura, die haar moeder verloor toen ze nog heel jong was en is opgevoed door haar vader, een hoge functionaris in het Japanse leger. Als gevolg hiervan is ze uitgegroeid tot een tomboy - in tegenstelling tot de traditionele Japanse opvattingen over vrouwelijkheid, studeert ze kendo, drinkt ze sake, kleedt ze zich in vaak bizar ogende westerse mode in plaats van de traditionele kimono, en is ze niet zo geïnteresseerd in huishoudelijk werk als in literatuur. Ze verwerpt ook het idee van gearrangeerde huwelijken en gelooft in het recht van een vrouw op een carrière en om te trouwen uit liefde.
