Merle Oberon was een van de grote filmsterren van de jaren 30 en 40. Volgens de studio's was ze geboren in Tasmanië. Er ging echter een gerucht dat de exotisch ogende actrice in werkelijkheid Brits-Indiaas was en geboren was in Calcutta. In Tasmanië geloven velen daar niets van.
