Hilary en Jackie du Pré groeien op als hechte tweelingen. Maar hun gedeelde passie voor muziek drijft een wig tussen hen. Aanvankelijk is Hilary de muzikale ster van het gezin, maar al snel ontpopt Jackie zich tot een uitzonderlijke celliste. Naarmate de zussen ouder worden, groeien ze ook steeds verder uit elkaar. Terwijl Jackie de ene internationale tournee na de andere afwerkt, kondigt Hilary haar huwelijk aan met Kiffer, een getalenteerde jonge dirigent. Jackie krijgt steeds meer last van de eenzaamheid en is wanhopig op zoek naar liefde en warmte. Dan ontmoet ze Daniel Barenboim, een beroemd pianist en dirigent.
