Het is ten tijde van de Spaanse Inquisitie. Torquemada is de grote kwelgeest voor de Spaanse bevolking. De vrouw van een bakker komt, ongewild, op tegen de openbare verbrandingen. De dictator beschuldigt haar van hekserij. Ze wordt gefolterd en kan alleen maar hopen op bevrijding door haar man.
