Het verhaal ontvouwt zich in het Engeland van 1934. De weduwe Honey, die zich in de betere kringen ophoudt, zet voor vrienden haar jaarlijkse halloweenfeest op poten. Ook huurt ze stiekem een rechercheur in om de moord op haar man op te lossen.
